Born in Mangalore, a coastal town in the west coast of southern India, Dr Vybhav Deraje grew up and did his schooling in Bangalore, the IT capital of India. He completed his medical degree at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore which is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences University in 2008. During his surgical residency he was attracted to the art and craft involved in Plastic surgery. He started working as a Registrar in Plastic surgery in a couple of hospitals in Bangalore before his entry into formal training in Plastic surgery. He completed his training in Plastic surgery from the prestigious Lok Nayak Hospital & associated Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi in 2015. He then travelled to the UK, for further training in Plastic surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead. This training was sponsored by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) under the International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme. The legacy of Queen Victoria Hospital and the ‘Guinea Pig Club’ is well known in the Plastic surgery community due to the role this hospital played in the treatment and rehabilitation of airmen injured in World War II under the leadership of the great Sir Archibald McIndoe. Dr Deraje was extensively trained here in Breast cancer reconstruction and Hand surgery, besides also operating on many patients with Skin cancer and Burns.

After a year long stint in the UK, he then focused his training in the area of his special interest, Craniofacial Surgery.
