He completed his medical degree at Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore which is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences University in 2008. This training was sponsored by the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) under the International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme. The legacy of Queen Victoria Hospital and the ‘Guinea Pig Club’ is well known in the Plastic surgery community due to the role this hospital played in the treatment and rehabilitation of airmen injured in World War II under the leadership of the great Sir Archibald McIndoe. Dr Deraje was extensively trained here in Breast cancer reconstruction and Hand surgery, besides also operating on many patients with Skin cancer and Burns.

After a year long stint in the UK, he then focused his training in the area of his special interest, Craniofacial Surgery.
